Some 'Salmon' wagons were fitted with end and centre stanchions to enable full 60' track panels to be carried without the need for tying them down.
The British Rail YKA wagon was a type of open wagon used for carrying bulk materials such as aggregates, ballast, and spoil. These wagons were introduced in the 1970s and were built with steel bodies and drop-down sides to allow for easy loading and unloading of materials.
The YKA wagons were commonly used in the construction industry to transport materials for infrastructure projects such as road and rail construction. They were also used to transport materials for coastal and flood defenses, as well as for general maintenance and repair work on the railway network.
In the later years of their service, some YKA wagons were also converted for use in carrying contaminated soil and waste from construction sites, which required additional safety features and protective equipment to prevent environmental contamination.
The YKA wagons were eventually phased out of service in the 2000s as newer and more efficient types of wagons were introduced.
