The safe operation of electric trains relies on the good condition of the pantograph; modern optical inspection equipment is used to monitor any wear to the pantograph carbon strips and can pick early signs of pantograph damage that may later cause problems. The data from such equipment is used to inform train maintenance schedules.
The equipment is normally mounted on both sides of the line pointing towards the overhead wire above each running line.
Supplied unpainted; a light coat of primer is recommended before painting.
